ACOG
encourages a teenage girl to have their first gynecologic exam
somewhere between the ages of 13 and 15. She should do this when
she and/or her parents believe it is right .
Among the topics discussed at this exam will be her body image,
in terms of diet and exercise. We will review the risks and possible
addiction that drugs, alcohol and smoking may have on an individual.
We will also counsel her on her sexuality. This conversation will
deal with healthy relationships, with the prevention of sexually
transmitted diseases, and with methods to prevent pregnancy.
A young woman may be challenged by situations and decisions that
she wishes to keep confidential from you. She needs accurate,
complete and objective health information. Our goal here is to
establish a relationship with her so that she will have easy and
comfortable access to our services as the need arises. As our
patient, we will respect her right to privacy if she so chooses.
