Below are some questions we are asked frequently in the summer:

Can I get a suntan?  What kind of suntan lotion may I use?

Yes, you may work on getting a reasonable tan.  You must remember, however, that because you are pregnant your skin is more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation and you will burn more easily.  Moderation is the key.  It is also important to drink plenty of fluids so as to avoid dehydration.

You should use suntan lotion that has a SPF factor of 15 or greater.  Again, since your skin is more sensitive because of your pregnancy, you should use lotion with a higher blocking factor then when you are not pregnant.

You may also use a sunless tanning lotion to give your skin the color you want.

What kind of insect repellant can I use?

There are many over-the-counter products that you may use.  “Skin-so-soft” or other similar products are fine.  Do not use any product that has DEET as one of its active ingredients.

It itches! What can I put on it?

Unfortunately mosquitoes and poison ivy/oak don’t know that you are pregnant.  You may use a Benadryl or Calamine-based product.  Follow the directions on the container.

If you have a severe outbreak of poison ivy you may require a stronger level of treatment.  Contact our office so that your provider can properly treat your condition.
