Background. Women infected with the influenza virus during pregnancy are at increased risk of serious complications and hospitalization. Each year the flu strain that occurs is different then the strain that occurred last year; last year’s flu shot will not protect you against this year’s flu strain.
Recommendations. The United States Center for Disease Control recommends the flu vaccine for all healthy pregnant women who will be in their 2nd or 3rd trimester during the flu season. It is also recommended that pregnant women at any stage of their pregnancy who have certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease) be vaccinated. If you have questions or concerns regarding whether or not you should receive the flu vaccine, please ask your provider on your next visit.
Safety. Studies of more than 2,000 pregnant women receiving the flu vaccine have shown no increase in adverse fetal outcomes.
