back to delivery
One of the most often asked questions by pregnant women is “Am
I in Labor?”. The information below can be used to help you know
what to look for to determine if you are in the beginning stages
of labor. If you are unsure, do not hesitate to call the office.
CONTRACTIONS |
Felt low in abdomen (belly), just above pubic bone
Tightening, crampy feeling: painful to most women
May feel low in middle of the back working its way around
to the front like a band
Usually start anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes apart, getting
stronger and more frequent
Time them from the beginning of cone to the beginning
of
the next one to determine how far apart they are |
WATER BROKE |
Labor may start with water breaking
(Ruptured Membranes)
May be a gush or a trickle of fluid
May be confused with urine because of baby pressing on
the bladder
Call the office or doctor on call if you think your water
has
broken
Go directly to Covenant Harrison if you are sure your
water
has broken |
BLOODY SHOW |
May happen when labor is about to begin, but can be
off
and on for several days
Usually a small amount, 2 to 4 tablespoons of blood and
mucous
Not necessary to go to hospital unless other labor signs
are
also present
Bleeding with clots (like a period) needs immediate action-
call doctor or go right to Covenant Harrison |
