A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus
Candida Albicans. Some of the indications of having a yeast
infection are listed below:
- Vaginal itching and irritation
- Vaginal pain or burning sensation during intercourse
- Unusual vaginal discharge
The growth of this fungus may be caused by:
- Recent antibiotic use
- Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, breastfeeding
or menopause
- Poorly controlled diabetes
- Douches and feminine hygiene products
- Use of steroids causing immune suppression
- Improperly cleaned reusable contraceptives (diaphragms,
cervical caps, etc)
- Frequent exposure to semen over a short time
- Certain spermicides
Your provider can usually diagnoses this by examining a vaginal
discharge under a microscope. It can be treated with either
single-dose medications or a course of treatments over 3-7
days. These antifungal medications can come in the form of
tablets, vaginal suppositories or cream. Your provider can
recommend what is best for you. If the infection occurs repeatedly,
then there may be something else going on that your provider
will have to evaluate.
Note that creams and suppositories are oil-based products
and can weaken the strength of latex condoms and diaphragms.
