An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac attached to one (or
both) of your ovaries. One typical type of cyst is a functional
cyst that occurs during the ovulation process. This type normally
shrink over several periods. There are several other types
of cysts also. Your provider will typically identify a cyst
during a normal pelvic exam. It will be monitored closely
for a few months. It may be necessary to look more closely
at the cyst with an ultrasound (non-invasive, done in the
office) or via a surgical procedure called a laparoscope in
which a very small telescope-like instrument is inserted through
a small incision. The laparoscope is equipped with a light
and viewing capabilities so that your doctor can carefully
examine the cyst(s).
Your doctor will discuss with you the results of such testing
and exams to determine the appropriate treatment plan. It
may be that surgery is necessary to remove the cyst(s).
A cyst in itself is not cancerous. It does need to be monitored
and examined so that there are no abnormal changes that go
untreated.
