There are over 100 different viruses that are grouped together
and called Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV). About 40 of these
are considered Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s). The
majority of sexually active people will get some type of HPV
during their life. Since HPV rarely causes symptoms, such
as genital warts, most people do not know they have this infection.
While most women with untreated HPV do not get cervical cancer,
some types of HPV’s can cause cervical cancer.
It is typically diagnosed from the examination of your annual
Pap smear.
Your provider will monitor the development of these HPV’s
through repeated Pap smears. By watching this closely, your
provider will promptly notice any significant changes in your
cervical cells that could be the beginning of something more
serious.
