Bowel Prep

On the day before Surgery:

  1. Beginning in the morning, drink or eat only clear liquids. (See examples below)

    Clear Liquids Include

    • Strained fruit juices without pulp
    • Water Chicken or Beef Bullion
    • Vegetable broth
    • Coffee or tea (without cream)
    • Kool-Aid or carbonated soft drinks
    • Gatorade, Powerade, etc.
    • Plan Jell-O
    • Popsicles
  2. At 12 noon take the first dose of both antibiotics as directed:
    - Metronidazole (Flagyl): one 500 mg tablet
    - Neomycin: two 500 mg tablets
  3. At 1 p.m. drink 3 tablespoons of Fleet Phospho-Soda mixed in 4 ounces of cold water or cold soda
    - follow this with 8 ounces of clear liquid
    - Drink a minimum of 24 ounces of clear liquids throughout the afternoon (Hint: the more water or juice you drink, the less cramps and nausea!!!)
  4. At 7 p.m. drink 3 tablespoons of Fleet Phospho-Soda mixed in 4 ounces of cold water or cold soda
    -follow this with 16 ounces or more of clear liquids over the next hour.
  5. At 9 p.m. take the second dose of both antibiotics as directed:
    - Metronidazole (Flagyl): one 500 mg tablet
    - Neomycin: two 500 mg tablets

You may drink as much clear liquids as desired prior to midnight

Take nothing by mouth after midnight unless directed to take you medication on the morning of surgery.

NOTE:

No Aspirin or Aspirin products should be taken 10-14 days prior to surgery. Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. Please check all "active ingredients" on your other medications.

You can purchase the Fleets Phospho-Soda solution (3 oz.) without a prescription at any pharmacy a day or two before your surgery.

You will be given a prescription when seen in the office or it will be called in to your pharmacy for the antibiotics (Metronidazole and Neomycin) to be taken the day before surgery.

Do Not:

- eat any solid food other than Jell-O on the day prior to surgery

- eat or drink anything on the morning of surgery unless specifically directed

- skip a dose of antibiotics or Fleets Phospho-Soda

Failure to follow these direction may result in your surgery being postponed or rescheduled
