The ovaries are two small glands, about the size of an almond,
on either side of the uterus. Once a month they produce an
unfertilized egg, which can be fertilized with a man’s sperm
to produce an embryo. The ovaries also produce female hormones,
especially estrogen and progesterone. These hormones help
control the menstrual cycle, breast development, lipid metabolism
and bone replacement capability.
It may become necessary to remove these glands for medical
reasons, including ovarian cancer. One or both (bi-lateral)
of the ovaries can be removed via a procedure called an oophorectomy.
After this procedure you will experience all the symptoms
of menopause.
Your physician will discuss treatment and surgical options
with you before this procedure is done.
