A hysteroscope is a long tube with a built-in viewing device.
It resembles a straw. The hysteroscope can be equipped with
a light and various minature surgical instruments.
The hysteroscope can be inserted through the vagina and cervix
and into the uterus. Your physician can examine the uterus
in detail to confirm and expand on the diagnosis for such
problems as abnormal uterine bleeding and pelvic pain. If
necessary, a biopsy of an unusual growth make be taken. Other
surgical procedures through the hysteroscope can also be done,
such as removing a polyp or fibroid. Additionally, a hysteroscopy
may be performed prior to a D & C being done.
This is a minimally invasive procedure and can be done in
an outpatient setting.
