Gynecology | da Vinci Surgery: da Vinci Hysterectomy

<< back to gynecology

If you and your physician have decided that a hysterectomy is the appropriate surgery for your condition, then the next decision is the type of hysterectomy to have.  While the traditional approaches are vaginal, open abdominal or laparoscopic, there is a new technique that should be considered.

The da Vinci Hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to have an improved, magnified and 3D view of the surgical area.  The robotic arms allow for more precise movement of the surgical instruments which are directly controlled by the surgeon at the computer console.  The movements of the surgeon’s hands and fingers are scaled, filtered and translated into the precise movements of the robotic instruments.

This can all be accomplished with typically four small incisions.  The small incisions coupled with the precise movements of the robotic instruments result in a number of  significant benefits to you:

            Significantly less post-operative pain

            Faster recovery time
                        A shorter hospital stay
A quicker return to your normal activities

            Better surgical/clinical outcomes
                        Less scarring
                        Less blood loss
                        Less risk of infection
                        Less anesthesia
                        Fewer complications

As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed.  Every surgery is unique to the procedure and patient.  You should talk to your physician about all of the various treatment options and the relative risks and benefits associated with each.  Together, you and your physician should make the best decision for you, once all the issues are considered.
